Where History Lives Part 11: The Chase Family Cemetery

Release Date: March 26, 2026

The Chase Family Cemetery

You may recognize many of the family names here!

There is a historic cemetery located at the corner of Watch Hill Rd. and Furnace Woods Road, adjacent to the Blue Mountain Middle School.
The exact address is 287-315 Watch Hill Rd.  You likely pass it often!!

The Chase family cemetery dates from 1849 – 1917. The first to be buried there were Elizabeth and her husband John. There are 56 identified gravesites, some still with tombstones, but some not legible.

Here are some other locally famous names, which you may recognize from both their descendants (still living in town) and from local streets named for them:  Gordineer, Haight, Peterson, Depew, Mason, McCord, Post, Purdy, Travis, and Volk.

Sadly, many of the gravestones are tiny, representing young children. Some died within 24 hours of birth, and many were less than 10 years old. It was a difficult time in history, when losing a child was not uncommon. This is an indication of how difficult life was in earlier times.

Authors disclosure: I was able to identify from records from Westchester County, that my home is located on a small piece of the farm owned by John Chase.
During his life, the land was cleared and farmed, and so all the trees on my property are secondary growth. There are many rock walls on my property as well as on my neighbors. I suspect that he handled many of them.

A few of the individuals buried here were Civil War veterans. Below is a discharge certificate we identified for George A. Post,
a Civil War veteran, who died and was later buried in the Chase Cemetery.

Civil War record of George A. Post who served in the military from January 5, 1864 through August 24, 1865. He died in 1881 and is buried in the Chase family cemetery.
